We had an excellent time on our bridge walk and I would like to thank the parent volunteers for coming out to support our learning. Giving students these real life experiences is so instrumental to their understanding of the ideas we discuss in class.

Our Bridge Walk is in 2 days.

 

Some highlights from this week include the testing of the structure of the arch. We completed an experiment to see how much weight arches of different sizes could hold.

In social studies we are investigating how some global organizations help people around the world. The students are creating posters including their research that they will present to the class. Some of the groups being studied are, The World Wildlife Fund, Team Seas, Team Trees and The Red Cross.

In Math students are working to develop their understanding of measurement concepts that include using mm. cm. and m. to compare different objects. We have also discussed the kilometre and how it is used for larger distances.

In LA, students are finishing their climbing stories through revisions and editing for clarity and punctuation.

We are looking forward to our upcoming field trips on May 17th and May 25th. A reminder to wear our formal uniforms, pack comfortable shoes and check the weather on those days. Thank you to all the volunteers who have allowed us to go on these special events. We couldn't do it without you!

Important Info

Grade 3 students will be hosting a Character Education Assembly towards the end of May. Our theme for the assembly is based around Global Citizenship and making a positive difference in the local and global community.  As part of the assembly the Grade 3 teachers would like to make a slideshow featuring our Grade 3 students as babies.  This will be a sweet way to say farewell to our Grade 3's and showcase how our world's future is in the hands of these babies:) We are asking parents to please email a baby photo to their classroom teacher by May 13th so that we can compile and make the slideshow in time for the assembly.

We are planning to go on two field trips this month. The first is on  May 17th to the Zoo. We are waiting on whether we have bussing for this trip so it is not fully confirmed yet. The second is on May 25th , which will be our bridge walk. This trip has been confirmed. We are still needing volunteers for both trips and may not be able to go if we don't meet the supervision requirements.

Field Trips

There are two upcoming field trips scheduled in May. The first field trip is Tuesday, May 17th to the Calgary Zoo. We then will go for a bridge walk in downtown Calgary on May 25th.   Parent volunteers are needed in order to make these trips happen. We need to have 5 parent volunteers for each day and without help we will not be able to go. Please,  email me at damcvea@cbe.ab.ca to let me know you can help.Thank you for you support.

Willy Wonka performance information:

- Please be sure to mark your calendars with dates, times and dress requirements for this upcoming week as it is very important for our play to be successful.  ALL actors and actresses should have their full costume at the school on Tuesday (if there is a problem, you must email Mrs. Taylor this weekend to come up with plan B).

- All tickets will be coming home with students on Tuesday.  Please be sure to put them in a safe place as you will need them to find your seats on the night of the concert.  All seats are assigned with a seat between each family group to support some social distancing.  Masks are not required, although as always, if you are more comfortable wearing a mask in a large group, you are more than welcome to do so.   Students may wear a mask while waiting for their performance time if they would like, however masks are encouraged to be removed during the performance so you can see and hear their beautiful voices! 

- Students MUST BE IN FORMAL UNIFORM (including black or navy socks with no holes in the toes!) on Thursday for school for our Dress rehearsal as well as the concert in the evening.  Please ensure your child has their white collared dress shirt, and green cardigan washed and ready for Thursday!

- All Actors and Actresses should arrive at First Alliance Church between 4:45 - 5:00 and should have already eaten.

- Students will arrive at FAC between 6:00- 6:15  in their FORMAL UNIFORM and find their teachers in the designated areas in the foyer.  Coats and shoes need to remain with the parents (students will be in socks only)

- Doors will open at 6:15 for everyone to find their seats - please ensure that everyone has used the washrooms prior to entering the sanctuary (including the students before you drop them off with their teachers)

- Concert will begin at 6:30 sharp!.  In the event that you arrive late, you will be escorted to the upper balcony in an effort to not disturb the audience or the play.  Please be EARLY!  There is parking on the far south side of the church in the event that the first parking lot seems full - there is LOTS of room for everyone on the south side.

This week...

LA- students completed some sound poems about a nature scene using great description trying to capture the mood of their picture.

We also began discussing climbing stories. There are the most detailed type of story and we have begun creating a new story as a class as a model for them in their future writing.

Math - We have begun completing work with fractions, creating images that show equal parts and analyzing pictures with fractional components.

We have also been discussing the passage of time , including how seconds, minutes and hours relate to each other and using everyday examples to estimate how much time passes in different activities. 

Social Studies- We have begun discussing the idea of Global Citizenship and our rights and responsibilities connected with this. We have investigated some of our basic rights as citizens in our country and how this extends to others in our world.

In our learning this week,

LA- Students completed their event stories through editing and revising their work. We also began small group novel studies in conjunction with our Guided Reading.

Math - We have been working on incorporating multiplication and division ideas into a problem solving context. Students relate pictures and number sentences in their answers.

Science - We are continuing to investigate sound production and safe hearing through understanding decibel levels.

Social - Students are examining the goods and services found in countries and analyzing the import/export process through the needs of a country.

This week,

In writing, students are finishing their event stories where they follow the journey of an ant. They worked on developing a sequence of related events that lead to an ants successful journey across our classroom interacting with many obstacles on the way. They are incorporating a structured sequence, a great beginning, excellent description and the use of transition words linking the events.

In math, students continue to develop their skills in division showing their understanding of creating equal groupings related to division equations. We have also connected this with their multiplication knowledge showing this connection through arrays, groupings and number families.

In social studies the students have examined ideas  of  goods and services and how these differ in the four countries we are studying.

In science, hearing and sound continues as the students gain understanding of how vibrations effect pitch, decibel levels relating to safe hearing, and creating instruments to test these ideas.

Monday is Valentines Day and a casual day. Students may bring in cards to exchange and can bring in a food item for themselves.

This week is also a short week as Teacher's Convention is on the 17th and 18th so there will be no school on those days. The following Monday is also a holiday so students will be back on Tuesday the 22nd.
